Summit Theme: Employability and Soft Skills

Essence of the Summit

In December 2016, the World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA) published a Call to Action white paper commenting on the current state of the Global Skills Gap with the following concluding statement:

Often ignored when discussing the Global Skills Gap and the Future of Work are the cognitive/non-cognitive skills (soft skills) necessary for success. These skills consist of subjects such as teamwork, empathy, interpersonal relationships, commitment and work ethics. In the Digital Age these skills are not stressed but much in demand.

In a recent survey in Bangladesh, fifty employers commented in resonance that the in demand skills gaps in graduates is that they lack thinking skills, communications skills and a sense of responsibility or ownership. So the greater concern now is whether graduating students are employable rather than the state of unemployment in a country. Cognitive and non-cognitive skills are demanded by any employer whatever the subject of expertise and more so in the fast moving Digital Age.

The purpose of the conference is to address the skills gap by launching educational products and educational methods that inculcate thinking skills, interpersonal skills, personal skills, communication skills and a sense of ownership and responsibility. As such the conference theme is: Developing Employability and Soft Skills among Graduates.

In view of the need of the day, emphasis is on incorporating soft skills in the existing curriculum, re-examining pedagogy that inculcates ownership of learning and develops thinking skills, helps incorporating interpersonal and personal skills. The idea behind the conference is to examine the challenges behind effective development of these skills in students who are habitual rote learners and educational systems that perpetuate such a mind set and thereby play a pivotal role to launch educational products and training of trainers on innovative pedagogy that addresses these issues.

Objectives of the Summit
